Sanyuanli Market in Beijing

Sanyuanli is one of the more “famous” markets among foreigners in Beijing. Here you can buy produce that is almost impossible to find at the typical Chinese fresh market. That also includes exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs. One can also find here basil, thai herbs or similar, basically almost everything that a “western” cook aspires and usually cannot find. In addition to that, there is fresh meat (butchers cut and mince meat to order), different varieties of cheese. There is also a good selection of fish, tanks of live fish and seafood look clean and with good variety. A western buyer can also find here groceries not found in Chinese markets (expect of course Jenny Lou or April Gourmet), and some groceries are here cheaper than in Jenny Lout or April Gourmet. Pastry for jiaoze is also available.

Sooo… what to buy here? Fruits are quite expensive, and for i would suggest to buy bananas, oranges or grapes somewhere. If somebody is looking for something specific and exotic, this is the choice. Selection of vegetables is good, prices are reasonable, so is the meat. At least basic knowledge of Chinese language is advisable. Also be aware, that there are no written prices listed.
